Well, figure out the killer, of course, because it’s coming frightfully close to home.And she does, after the usual scratching of head and false leads: Who was where? Who has an alibi? Who’s looking especially guilty? There’s a few run-ups to London, and some squaring off with a Scotland Yard inspector (no flirting there, our author has someone else in mind). To Ms. Rosett’s credit, she doesn’t make it easy for Olive, who thinks she has it all figured out – and then the truth takes a twist.An entertaining beginning to a promising series. Looking forward to the next.

This book makes a great light holiday read. The plot and characters are interesting enough to keep you reading, and the attention to detail in descriptions of décor, costumes etc adds to the enjoyment of reading a novel set in the 1920s. My only quibble is that , whilst it is set in England and most of the characters are supposed to be English they all somehow felt more American to me. While you can notice the influence of English writers such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, or perhaps a bit of P.G Wodehouse and the like, somehow the quintessential Englishness is not captured. having said that, I still enjoyed this book and would read more by the author.

When Olive tries her hand at detective work her first case is to investigate her cousin Violet’s fiancé Alfred. Both Olive and Violet are guests at a weekend house party at Archly Manor, with Alfred and his friends. When Alfred is pushed to his death from the balcony Olive must find the killer to prove Violet is innocent. Lots of fun and suspense.

I love period mysteries and this was was a very fun read. It had a little bit of everything. Some family issues, some romance, and some murder. I look forward to the next one.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It presented the early 1920's in a believable format and the descriptions of places, clothing, cars etc were very enjoyable, and not too overdone. The characters were well written if not totally engaging but I'm sure they will develop as the series progresses. I will definitely look for the 2nd installment in the adventures of Olive, High Society Lady Detective.

I'm glad so many readers took pleasure from this book.I didn't like it. I couldn't tell the characters apart. All the women were the same, and all the men were the same.There was no plot. When the killer was revealed in the lengthy exposition at the end, I couldn't remember who that person was. At first I thought it was one of the children. Then I realized it was one of the indistinguishable adults.

Loved this book - I really like the golden age era, and this book had all the details I find fascinating. Fun story!

I normally steer away from historical fiction but because I am a HUGE fan of Sara Rosett, I made an exception. A great decision on my part. I’m already a fan of Olive Belgrade and moving on to her second adventure.

5 starsThis was such a fun book to read. It was a 'Goonies' adventure mixed with a 'National Treasure' mystery. I highly recommend this for all kids and adults alike. Laura Ruby really has a grasp on how children think and behave and she created a magical world that is bursting with imagination and mystery. I love the vocabulary she used and how she seamlessly worked the explanation of a thing into the story. Her characters were so real and even the cat was so realistic. Though the world is so different from our reality, it too felt real. I just loved this book and urge parents to buy it for their children.

THIS BOOK, YOU GUYS. I'm extremely pleased to say that this book lived up to it's gorgeous cover, it's fascinating premise, and the amazing writing that the incomparable Laura Ruby has delivered in the past. Honestly, I got Harry Potter feels from this one. It was charming, smart, and fun. Not only are the characters real but the world sucks you in and drags you happily around like Nine (the cat) does with a sock. I loved this book with all my heart and I'm 25. I'm not going to stop recommending this for a while and will be anxiously waiting for the sequel and the movies and the movie sequels because I have a feeling that it's going to be huge. This is a must-read for everyone over the age of seven or eight and I hope it's passed around in families and talked about because it's just too good to be ignored. Buy and share!

This book had its main focus on this old puzzle called the Cipher, which was designed by the Morningstarrs, this genius twin pair, brother and sister. They invented many things, and designed the Morningstarr Tower, which has many elevators that move in all directions. The Morningstarrs, along with their employees had secrets and basically lived under the radar.In this book, three kids try to solve the Cipher. The kids were Tess and Theo, brother and sister. Both really smart. Jaime. The artist. Smart. Finally, Nine, the cat that needs a leash. Slightly crazy. Together, these people, (plus cat) are kind of brought closer to each other because a powerful man named Darrell Slant bought their apartment building.My opinion? I think that this book was really great. If you like solving puzzles and challenging your brain, you would really LOVE this book. This book had what I like to read about. Action, personality, detail, scary moments, bonding, and, frankly, too many other things to list. You need to read York: The Shadow Cipher!!! Thank you for writing this book Laura Ruby <3

My son tore through this book in three days. He wants to read the next one right now, but he's going to have to wait. He said he loved the steampunk meets sci-fi feel.

I loved this book.

I have read several of Laura Ruby's book and this is the strongest so far. She just gets better and better. Looking forward to the next book in the trilogy!

Drizzt is convinced that his friends and adopted family are gone - so he sees now path ahead of him, except one that is of his making...carved from the hides of orcs. The Hunter Blade trilogy is Drizzt's finest moments as a swordslinger. With this two blades, he sets on the task of destroying the very thing he believes killed his friends - the hordes and hordes of orcs and orc-kin.Drizzt, like other Forgotten Realms heros (Elminster, Khelben "Blackstaff", Cadderly, Halaster, etc) is a hero for one reason - they always triumph over evil. It is, for lack of better words, the epitome of this type of story character. Whether in fantasy novels, spy novels, or scifi - if it is fiction, then the hero is better than the average man (or Drow in this case) and above his lesser enemies. That is one reason I like the stories of Drizzt by Salvatore. He loves this character as much as his avid readers do and has come up with story after story on this particular ranger's latest exploits.Overall, this story is a bit dark - revolving around Drizzt's struggle with his inner "dark elf" self. His race is known for seeking vengence, for destroying entire Drow Houses in bloodlust - and Drizzt, a ranger, dedicated to maintaining the over and balance, must release his anger - but remain true to his calling. As a slight caveat - I am a big fan of DnD and the Realms, if that wasn't obvious, so my review may be swayed a bit towards liking Salvatore's work.

At first The Lone Drow was a tough read, by all means it certainly is throughout but by the end I have found a deeper perspective than I had throughout the beginning and even middle of the epic, and there can be no lesser descriptor, middle piece of this Trilogy. There are MANY depressing notes in this book, themes that seem to repeat themselves from older books and even themes and plot lines that are driven home to the point where I often found myself in anger or frustration screaming GET ON WITH IT. Then I took a step back and realized that these weren't simply repeated plot lines for the sake of filling pages but each served the necessary function of driving the contemplations of each of our beloved characters deeper into themselves. In the case of Wulfgar who required several books to get back to his "normal" self it felt more as if he was a slave to plot and that at any real time he could have been brought back easily with the stroke of a few keys, whereas, spoiler warning, the events of that lead into this book and the events of the book itself were necessary to drive the characters into a wall, forcing them to contemplate their existence and question the morals and beliefs they had always upheld but had never before been truly tested against the weight of reality. This book signifies a loss of innocence for Drizzt and even for Cattie Brie. Both are forced to face not only their mortality but the mortality of those they truly care about and are driven to the very edge of their morals and question the truth and strength of their convictions. In this realization I have come to consider this book the best yet by my favorite author and I eagerly await the next chapter that I shall commence the moment I finish this review.
