Thailand travel guides don't tell you just quite how serious a problem the taxi operators are in the country.

A tourist was beaten to a pulp and dumped on wasteland for not paying an extortionate bill of 30,000 baht to a bar owner. Extortion is the word, and violence and intimidation always lie behind the Thailand sex trade.

The list goes on and on, examples of people being fleeced of every penny of their life savings, and even murdered. If you are interested in retiring to Thailand or merely in Thailand living, this book is an essential guide through the myriad traps awaiting you.

Anyone that knows Thailand well knows that I'm merely pointing out some scams which are common knowledge - to we that know Thailand well. If you don't know Thailand well - then you have a choice. Ignore the book, and suffer the consequences, or educate yourself and get ahead of the game. I know you can read a free sample of the book, and I chose to put the Jet Ski scam and gem scams first, so that even those people who did not go forward and purchase the rest of the book, would be aware of these most notorious, and ridiculous of scams. The Jet Ski scam is horrendous - and can degenerate into violence. The gem scam is not on the same level, but they can also result in serious inconvenience and cost. So if you read the sample, and don't read the book, I'm cool with that. Someone, somewhere, will be lying on a beach watching the Jet Skis cruising the waves, and will say to themselves - "I'm not getting on one of them, The Blether says they are trouble," and that will suit me fine. That's one in the Karma bank for me - and the same will go for anyone that sidesteps the gem scam due to what I say in the free sample. Great. After the free sample, there are another 48 scams listed - I go straight into the taxi scams, a deeply irritating and troublesome issue, and on. Some of the scams will not befall you - as a tourist you won't get involved in things such as the "Music Police," scam.  However, the book is not aimed entirely at tourists. It's also aimed at people looking to retire to, or relocate to the country. I don't just tell you the scam, I explain the method, and how to avoid it. There's even one scam where I put my hands up and admit it's hard to sidestep.  In fact, there's even a couple of scams in the book where I point out that what starts out as an act of generosity degenerates into an act of folly. The "child abuse," scam is one of them. The "child abuse," scam is a perfect example of criminal Thais playing upon the gullibility of tourists. Once you realize what's going on, you would never, ever encourage it by "donating." People going on vacation will learn a lot quickly in this book - people looking to relocate to Thailand will learn even more. It's a crash course in what to avoid - and if you avoid even a singular scam or scenario as explained in the book, you will save far more than the cover price. It's a no-brainer - download the book now and get way ahead of the game.

James Pattison, Senior Lecturer in Politics, University of Manchester

Dr James Pattison's research interests include humanitarian intervention, the responsibility to protect, the ethics of war, and the increased use of private military and security companies. His first book, Humanitarian Intervention and the Responsibility to Protect: Who Should Intervene?, published by Oxford University Press, was awarded a 'Notable Book Award' by the International Studies Association (International Ethics Section). His PhD on humanitarian intervention was awarded the Sir Ernest Barker Prize for Best Dissertation in Political Theory by the Political Studies Association. He has published various articles on the ethics of force, including for Ethics & International Affairs, European Journal of Political Theory, International Theory, Journal of Military Ethics, Journal of Applied Philosophy, and Journal of Political Philosophy. He is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Manchester.

About the Author
Andy Liu is a professor in department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta. His research interests span discrete mathematics, hypergraph theory, combinatorial geometry, foundations of mathematics, mathematical education and recreational mathematics. The common characteristics of the research problems he works on are that they are easy to understand but not so easy to solve.

In 1985 Bruce Shawyer joined Memorial University as full professor, serving as head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1985-91. Dr Shawyer's professional interests in mathematics research include approximation of the sums of slowly convergent series, the summability of series and integrals, and Euclidean geometry. He is founder of the mathematical challenge for junior high school students and former head coach of the Canadian team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. Dr Shawyer has authored 118 publications and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the ATOM (A Taste Of Mathematics) book series.
