The mystery is extremely well crafted, complex enough to keep the reader guessing, and gripping. Superb. What makes the story extra special are the human interest touches; so many, so heartwarming, so human nature. And even animals and babies. Oh my. This just couldn't be better written than it is. Charlton is a very talented storyteller who used her gifts to great effect.This book is "clean" and appropriate for teens. But it is wonderfully appropriate for adults. Nothing fluffy or simplistic here. I suppose it works as a stand alone but why would anyone want to miss the series?

I have read and loved all the books in this series and this is another wonderful story. Det. Lavender and Constable Woods are called to a house in Mayfair for a dead body behind a locked door. Turns out the man in the room was murder in the street some time before he returned to his lodging. Without adding spoilers, Lavender and Woods travel to a number of locations and talk to some very interesting characters including to sister newly back in Britain after spending most of their lives in India. As well as the dead man's wife and land lady. There are threads to the continuing series, but they do not distract from the main mystery.While this book is part of a series, the story is self contained and can be read without the other books, but you should consider reading the series because this is a wonderful series with great characters and dialogue.

I have always enjoyed the Detective Lavender mysteries. I was particularly pleased with the length of this one. I had mentioned to Ms. Charleton that I finished the previous books so quickly that I felt like there was a lot of the story that was missing. I loved the ending😍

I gave this book 5 stars because of all the intricacies that the author pulled together so well at the end. I will not recap the story as I think the reader should enjoy all the parts but the author once again gave us a great mystery with Lavender and Woods slowly putting all the pieces together. When done with the story you feel like you know everyone personally. The new addition to the family was sweet and I look forward to how future stories might include her. I really enjoyed the story and was sad to have it end. Great job Karen Charlton! Very gifted writer!!!!

Again we have Lavender and Woods trying to solve a murder of a perplexing individual. I would like to say this is a most enjoyable book and story plot. Ms. Charlton weaves her characters and plot lines masterly into a very satisfying story. Just enough mystery and red herrings to keep you guessing to the end.

These books are part Historical and Part Mystery-I love it all. Hate to finish one, because then I wait and wait for the next one. the characters are more deeply defined with each book and I love that Lavender is now growing his family and Wood's childrn are maturing. Enjoyable read on several levels.

The author paints a vivid picture of England and the police force of the time. The characters are believable and well-rounded, with human foibles and insecurities. The mystery was intriguing. I have read all of the series so far and enjoyed them all.

Refining Sound is very clear and well-organized. I think that both the text and the illustrations do a good job of explaining the underlying theory of sound synthesis along with examples. I went into reading Refining Sound with quite a lot of prior knowledge about sound synthesis theory, so some of it was a refresher for me, but even still there were several areas where I was able to learn something new (such as the section on granular synthesis, which had a better explanation of granular synthesis than I had found using online articles). The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because I would have liked to see more depth on the FM synthesis section. Still, I would highly recommend this to someone who is looking to learn about sound synthesis theory and techniques.

Very comprehensive and informative read on synthesizers. At times it did get quite technical, but nothing I couldn't follow up on with a little wikipedia background reading. The hands-on exercises were done via a DAW (digital audio workstation) that you had to install and run on your computer. While nice for DAW users, I felt that the author could've put a bit more practical instruction for those of us who have actual keyboard synths with buttons, knobs, and dials. That was my only knock on the book. Otherwise, I learned a ton about synthesis and modulation. Exactly what I wanted out of this book.

This is a great book if you want to know the science behind synthesis. The author knows his stuff and presents it well.I enjoy this book very much and I've learned a lot from it. I especially like the hands-on sections where you get to hear what you're learning.But... minus a star for the free software download (from a third party).Still, this book is a great investment for a techie, with tons of great info.

As an engineer, I understood the concepts, but I appreciated the way the explanations of common usage and naming and practical effect. I have Crystal, but I could done without the text concerning it, which could have been only on the companion website.

I'm educated in traditional western classical music theory, but completely ignorant in the synthesized world. This book opened up the synthesized world which I always wanted to explore.The book has a clear structure that helped me understand synthesized sound (well, actually all kinds of sound). It also has tools that can be used to do experiments with synthesizers. The included Crystal software and the interactive examples are tremendously helpful!For beginners like me, reading this book gives a much better foundation than watching hundreds of disconnected YouTube videos!

Great book so far (I haven't finished it as yet). Covers a lot of useful territory for those who work with and program softsynths, and has some good info on things like aliasing and the Nyquist theorem. Highly recommended book if you, like me, want to move from a synth preset user to someone who can make their own sounds and patches with a softsynth.

There are way too many books on the market purporting to teach sound design/synth programming. This book is useful only after you've learned to program sounds by ear, at which point it is informative and well organized. However, it will not teach you make sounds deliberately, with purpose. For that I recommend the software tutorial unfortunately titled Syntorial. If that's not an option a distant second place is Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook.

It is the most accurate and complete information about synthesis that a person without any knowledge of the theme could find.
