Salvatore’s epic Hunter’s Blades trilogy increases the tension, empowers the antagonists and widens the scope of his narrative. Perhaps the best of all the Drizzt novels, the hero is stripped of all his comforts and reduced to an animalistic instrument of revenge. Villains and allies of Drizzt receive lavish coverage and the Spine of the World is expanded. After this trilogy, Salvatore becomes less and less predictable and relishes in confounding the expectations of his loyal fan readers. Drizzt belongs on the same fantasy shelf as Conan, Sherlock Holmes and Elric.

R.A. Salvatore and his epic character, Drizzt, are icons of the Forgotten Realms series. You won't find a Dungeons and Dragons gamer who doesn't know about dark elves (Drow) or Drizzt. Log into any given online fantasy game and you'll see tons of toons with Drizzt (or iterations thereof) as their online handle. Salvatore has created...well, a hero! That being said, heros seldom die in stories until they have completed their final task or been betrayed. Drizzt has had neither happen, so he's still fighting. And in the "Lone Drow" he fights and fights and fights. This book shows the effects of bitter loneliness - the feeling one gets when they believe they have lost everything that they hold dear. Drizzt is convinced that his friends and adopted family are gone - so he sees now path ahead of him, except one that is of his making...carved from the hides of orcs. The Hunter Blade trilogy is Drizzt's finest moments as a swordslinger. With this two blades, he sets on the task of destroying the very thing he believes killed his friends - the hordes and hordes of orcs and orc-kin.Drizzt, like other Forgotten Realms heros (Elminster, Khelben "Blackstaff", Cadderly, Halaster, etc) is a hero for one reason - they always triumph over evil. It is, for lack of better words, the epitome of this type of story character. Whether in fantasy novels, spy novels, or scifi - if it is fiction, then the hero is better than the average man (or Drow in this case) and above his lesser enemies. That is one reason I like the stories of Drizzt by Salvatore. He loves this character as much as his avid readers do and has come up with story after story on this particular ranger's latest exploits.Overall, this story is a bit dark - revolving around Drizzt's struggle with his inner "dark elf" self. His race is known for seeking vengence, for destroying entire Drow Houses in bloodlust - and Drizzt, a ranger, dedicated to maintaining the over and balance, must release his anger - but remain true to his calling. As a slight caveat - I am a big fan of DnD and the Realms, if that wasn't obvious, so my review may be swayed a bit towards liking Salvatore's work.

At first The Lone Drow was a tough read, by all means it certainly is throughout but by the end I have found a deeper perspective than I had throughout the beginning and even middle of the epic, and there can be no lesser descriptor, middle piece of this Trilogy. There are MANY depressing notes in this book, themes that seem to repeat themselves from older books and even themes and plot lines that are driven home to the point where I often found myself in anger or frustration screaming GET ON WITH IT. Then I took a step back and realized that these weren't simply repeated plot lines for the sake of filling pages but each served the necessary function of driving the contemplations of each of our beloved characters deeper into themselves. In the case of Wulfgar who required several books to get back to his "normal" self it felt more as if he was a slave to plot and that at any real time he could have been brought back easily with the stroke of a few keys, whereas, spoiler warning, the events of that lead into this book and the events of the book itself were necessary to drive the characters into a wall, forcing them to contemplate their existence and question the morals and beliefs they had always upheld but had never before been truly tested against the weight of reality. This book signifies a loss of innocence for Drizzt and even for Cattie Brie. Both are forced to face not only their mortality but the mortality of those they truly care about and are driven to the very edge of their morals and question the truth and strength of their convictions. In this realization I have come to consider this book the best yet by my favorite author and I eagerly await the next chapter that I shall commence the moment I finish this review.

Ancient West Mexico: Art and Archaeology of the Unknown PastFrom Thames & Hudson

This volume documents the splendid accomplishments of Ancient West Mexico, and brings together some of its finest examples of sculptural art, including representations of people, animals and plants, as well as vessels and models of houses, ceremonial centres, ball games and ritual scenes. All the extraordinary earthenware figures illustrated here have been recovered from burial sites and shaft tombs. They represent a wide range of subjects - warriors, chieftains, ladies, acrobats, shamans, musicians, ball players, festival couples and bound prisoners - in a variety of styles from about 200 BC to AD 800 - that compose the artistic canon of Ancient West Mexico, a region encompassing the modern states of Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit.

From Library Journal
This beautiful and impressively researched book accompanies an exhibit organized by the Art Institute of Chicago. Editor Townsend is curator of the institute's Department of African and Amerindian Art and author of The Aztecs (Thames & Hudson, 1993), among other titles. The book's 15 essays, written by an international group of experts, explore the art, archaeology, and cultural and political history of the region while demonstrating connections to other Mesoamerican cultures and influence on major 20th-century painters and sculptors. The essays are supplemented by 446 illustrations, maps, chronological charts, site plans, and tomb reconstructions. Few other books exist on this area of Mexico, which recent investigations indicate was a much more advanced culture than originally believed. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries and for special collections.?Sylvia Andrews, Indiana State Lib., Indianapolis
