About the Author
Simon Michael (Micha) Namenwirth was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1934. After Secondary School, and years of violin study, he enrolled at one of the Amsterdam music conservatories, where he majored in music theory, bassoon, and conducting. He then moved to the United States to take up the study of Musicology. In 1965 he received a PhD in Music from the University of Minnesota, and in 1967 a Master’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston. Namenwirth worked as a staff member of Harvard and Berkeley, ultimately as an Assistant University Librarian for Collection Development. In 1973 he was appointed University Librarian and Professor of Music at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) in Belgium, where he remained until his retirement in 1998. He also taught Library Management at the University of Antwerp. Under his aegis, the VUBIS automated library system was developed. In 1987 appeared his three-volume Gustav Mahler-bibliography. After retirement Namenwirth wrote a monograph about Gerard Mortier’s interviews during his directorship of the Brussels Monnaie Theater, followed by (thus far) eight works of fiction (in Dutch). Two of these (Nico and Absoluut Gehoor) were published by the VUBPress of Brussels in 2010. Several are now available in English-language versions.
